It was another beautiful day with clear blue skies but low temperatures. Yesterday it was a blizzard and we did not ski but today the slopes were well groomed with strips of powder on the sides. The best of all worlds. We did a black on Campground, Slot, that was a lot of fun with no disasters. The rest of the day was spent going from one side of the mountain to the other with a lunch at Gwen’s, a favorite of Goldy Hawn’s, at the top of the Alpine Springs lift. The picture below shows a view of the inside. Not the sports equipment hanging from the ceiling.

Skiing the Burn at Aspen Snowmass
Last year Snowmass added a gondola from the base to the Elk Camp area on the east side of the ski mountain. The picture below is a view looking back at the base area from the gondola. It is especially nice when there is high wind and blowing snow with the only disadvantage is having to remove one’s skies before loading.

One of our favorite runs is the burn at Snowmass. The day was bright and clear with great Colorado snow. I held the camera in one hand, my poles in the other and headed down from the top of the Big Burn lift. The entrance is through a narrow tree lined path which opens up onto a wide expanse of ski heaven.

Blizzard and powder in Aspen Snowmass
A large storm moved in and produced constant snow with high winds. The new gondola is a real benefit on days like this. The higher lifts such as the Burn, Elk Camp and High Alpine were closed all day because of the wind. However, the silver lining to this cloud is POWDER!! While requiring more energy to ski, the thrill of plowing through the light stuff is difficult to beat.
At the top of the gondola at Elk Camp is the new children’s area. To ensure the little tykes don’t get too stressed out they are taken up the slope on a moving carpet with a wind defying transparent cover.

Skiing in Aspen
We have spent two glorious days in Aspen skiing under fantastic conditions. For après ski it was another session with Twrp Anderson and John Sommers at the Silvertree lounge listening to great country western music. http://www.heartoftherockiesmusic.com/heartoftherockiesmusic/
We also met a horse shoer from South Africa who now works with his stable managing wife in the Aspen area. Today we rode up a lift with a couple who runs a weekly rodeo in Aspen. Many old friends who show up every year at our hotel are also here including our dear cousins Dick and Jody.
